Our school is on the edge
of North America.
At least that’s how we like to think about it.
Maybe it’s our Montessori roots, but geography and a keen sense of place are important to us. We didn’t just land here randomly. Our upper school (K-8) combines the old Berkeley train station – the Santa Fe Railway train depot – with two modern classroom buildings built for us in 2003.
Our Early Childhood Center (ECC) is the charming original site of the school, and dedicated to three to five-year-olds. When Alice Waters taught here, that’s where she worked, in the Cedar classroom. It happens to be just down the street from her world-famous food mecca, Chez Panisse. The ECC is an enclosed, protected, and nurturing environment, perfect for the smallest humans. They’ll love it. So will you.
We believe in ideas like historic preservation, conservation, energy efficiency and doing more with less, new urbanism, walking, biking and taking the bus. We’re a couple of blocks from BART and on a major bus route. And there’s coffee available in all directions.
Think of it as “the not so big school”. We think you’ll like it.
