Extended Day

The Berkeley School supports families.

We offer before-school care beginning at 7:30 a.m. every day at the Elementary/Middle School, and 8:00 a.m. at the Early Childhood Center. After-school care is available until 6:00 p.m., which includes the option of enrichment classes such as drama, sports skill-building, clay, carpentry, and Spanish. We also offer special camps at all levels during school vacations, including the summer. TBS Extended Day program and vacation camps are themselves carefully designed to be in line with our school’s mission and values, offering authentic choice within structure, hands-on learning, care for others, and FUN!

K-5th grade students can participate in the afternoon Extended Day program in one of three ways: parents may purchase either a full year contract or pre-paid blocks of 20 hours; or students can attend on a drop-in basis. Details of each option follow. Students do not sign up for most classes in advance (exceptions listed below); they can attend or not, as they please, on a daily basis. All Extended Day care and classes for 6th-8th grade students are included in their tuition.

K-1 students will meet every day after school in the K/1 play area, where they will be provided with snack, art supplies, and the freedom to play! They will also have class/art studio options (see below). THERE IS NO NEED TO SIGN UP FOR CLASSES IN ADVANCE, EXCEPT FOR CARPENTRY AND HANDS-ON SCIENCE, FOR WHICH YOU MUST CONTACT JAVANNE TO SIGN UP.

2nd and 3rd grade students will sign in every day in the library for 20 minutes of snack and quiet reading time. 4th and 5th grade students will sign in every day in the Art Studio for 15 minutes of snack and quiet reading time. At 3:30pm, all 2nd-5th grade students will then have fun playing on the play structure and in the solar system area. They will also have class/art studio and homework club options (see below). THERE IS NO NEED TO SIGN UP FOR CLASSES IN ADVANCE, EXCEPT FOR CARPENTRY, FOR WHICH YOU MUST CONTACT JAVANNE TO SIGN UP. If your child is going to Netivot Shalom for Hebrew School, please sign up with Javanne at jgolob@theberkeleyschool.org to have your child walked over there.

To sign up for a full year contract, please contact Shira Freehling, sfreehling@theberkeleyschool.org. To purchase pre-paid blocks of 20 hours ($200/20 hours) or if you have questions about the program, please contact Javanne Golob, jgolob@theberkeleyschool.org. Pre-paid blocks save you $1 per hour over the drop-in AM and PM rate of $11 per hour (billed by the half-hour).

6th-8th grade students will sign in to Extended Day in the Main Room of the Middle School, where they will get snack and homework help, and be able to play games, read, talk, etc. They will also have class and sports options (see below). ** NO NEED TO SIGN UP FOR CLASSES EXCEPT FOR SPORTS WITH CRAIG; please sign up directly with him at cjackson@theberkeleyschool.org.
