The area around each campus of The Berkeley School is full of interesting businesses, non-profits and community organizations. Here are a few of our favorites. If you’d like to nominate others, just let us know!
Near the University Ave. campus:
Urban Creeks Council - Preserving and restoring urban streams and habitats
Strawberry Creek Park – A regular spot for PE classes
Fellini Restaurant & Coffee Bar – Need a great Italian meal, or just a jolt of caffeine?
Bangkok Thai Restaurant - Great little Thai place, perfect for after Back-to-School night
Monte Cristo Taqueria - A super place for Carnitas or a great burrito
Strawberry Creek Lodge - Senior housing in Berkeley for active elders
Chapparal House - A skilled nursing facility very near our main campus
Metro Lighting - The place to go in Berkeley for unique handmade lighting fixtures
The Spanish Table – Need Spanish ingredients? Serrano ham? Clay cookery? This is the place!
Everett and Jones BBQ – If you’re in the mood for some brisket or ribs… look no further
East Bay Vivarium – This is the place if you’re looking for snakes, lizards, or other cold-blooded companions
United Nations Association – Buy your cards and gifts here and feel good about supporting UNICEF!
Serendipity Books – You’ve never seen a bookstore quite like this! Rare and antiquarian treasures.
Near the ECC on Francisco St.:
Gregoire – And not just because he’s a parent at TBS! Great gourmet takeout food
Virginia Bakery – A great place for cakes, cookies or after-school treats
Chez Panisse – The classic, the original, the place for great local seasonal food (founded by a former teacher)
Saul’s Deli – Not only was it designed by our own parent, David Trachtenberg, but it’s mehuderdik!
Cesar – This is a great place for drink, tapas and on nice days, open air people watching
The Cheese Board – Need cheese? 19 varieties of Gouda alone; over 400 total. Overwhelming!
Cheese Board Pizza - One kind per day. Awesome. ‘Nuff said.
The Original Peets – Yup, this is it. All other Peets (not to mention all Starbucks) started right here…
Baubles & Beads – You could practically recreate the crown jewels with the stock of this shop.
North Shattuck Organic Farmer’s Market – Every Thursday afternoon, for the best organic produce in town.
Allen Ginsberg Memorial Poetry Garden – A little oasis in the city, open to the public.
There are tons more… send your suggestions to Laura Gorjance and we’ll see about including them!
