The Berkeley School community is a welcoming and inclusive one.

Family Association

We have an amazing community here at TBS made up of parenting adults, extended family, school staff, educators, and others in the community who want to support the TBS mission of igniting curious minds, awakening generous hearts, and engaging a changing world. The TBS Family Association (the FA) organizes activities, services, and fundraisers throughout the year. It is our goal that every family has an opportunity to participate, so we can better serve our children and school community, while meeting and spending time with each other.

TBS Hub

The Hub (the TBS version of Berkeley Parents Network) is an online environment to discuss topics that might be of interest to other TBS families and to use as a marketplace for items and services within our community. We use the Hub to share information on topics that are not directly related to school. Someone may make a post because they need a house-sitter, or a recommendation for a new dentist, or wants to sell their dining room table. If you haven’t already, check it out!

Family Affinity Groups

We’ve learned that providing opportunities for affinity groups – connection opportunities for adults whose parenting paths are less widely represented in our overall community – are essential to sustaining our diverse, multicultural school community and are a critical ingredient in sustaining a mission-aligned culture. Contact our Multicultural Leadership Team for more information about our family affinity groups.

Our calendar includes several events that promote…

Schoolwide Celebrations

Fall Fest

This annual all-school event is the first opportunity our families on both campuses have to spend time together. We all gather at our University Avenue Campus for an autumn-inspired celebration to kick off the school year with food, music, games, and loads of family fun. The bake-off/cook-off is legendary. With a student competition and adult competition, there is always plenty to enjoy! The event also features live bluegrass music from Cerrito teacher Mike Sinclaire’s band, Transit of Venus; professional face painting; petting zoo; bounce house and slime making (you know you want that gooey mess out of your house!)

GrandFriends Day

GrandFriends Day is a special day when we invite our students’ beloved grandfriends to join us for a special morning here on campus. Who is a grandfriend? Some of our students are fortunate to have grandparents and some are fortunate to have family friends and relatives with whom they have a special bond — aunts and uncles, friends, and neighbors. GrandFriends Day is one of our favorite days of the year here at TBS!

Winter Craft-Making Fair

We always look forward to celebrating the season as a TBS community at the annual Winter Fest! This holiday celebration features a cook-off with a cultural compenent and loads of fun games and activities for kids. Holiday craft Making tables are run by talented people from our own TBS community who will help you make festive homemade Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or seasonal gifts for the loved ones on your list.

Wrap Party Benefit

The Wrap Party is our annual end-of-year celebration under the stars and often called the party of the year. This casually elegant evening features live music, dancing, food truck fare, and just enough irreverent humor to keep you on your toes when you’re not dancing! All event and auction proceeds benefit TBS programs.

Performances of Learning

Math Night

Math Night is designed, not as a one-time performance of understanding, but an event that demonstrates the learning process. You’ll have a chance to learn from – and with – your child as you play math games and experience a variety of materials.

The goal of the evening is to celebrate and learn about the mathematical thinking, teaching, and learning that occurs in our classrooms. Families in grades 7 and 8 will also have a chance to engage in some labs and activities from our science curriculum. Families in K-5th will have an opportunity to engage with activities from our Bridges Mathematics curriculum as well as interactive games like DreamBox on iPads. Our goal is to build a strong school-home partnership around our math pedagogy.

    Winter & Spring Sing

Families on our University Avenue (K-8) Campus are treated to two concert performances each year, one to close the winter semester and one to mark the beginning of spring. Students work hard to prepare for the Winter and Spring Sing, often composing their own music and choreographing their own routines!

Students on our Early Childood Campus perform an annual “Spring Sing” for families replete with infectious singing and dancing and irresistable jubilation. Can’t take the time off work to attend in person? Not to worry! We always offer families the option to watch online via our livestream.

    Art Show

Our annual all-student art show features pieces from every student at TBS. the artwork is often interdisciplinary in that it often harkens back to work students are doing in cultural studies, Spanish, music, science and math. The show, which stays up for four days at our University Avenue Campus, always includes fun and engaging interactive components. It takes hundreds of people hours to transform daily teaching areas into gallery spaces so this is an all-hands-on-deck event that requires several volunteer from our parenting community. Opening night is among our highest-attended and most-anticipated events of the school year!

    Middle School Play

In March, Middle school students present the annual Middle School Play. From set decoration and costuming to lighting/AV and stage management, students are at the helm of every aspect of the performance. They often choose pieces that can resonate with their younger classmates at TBS like “Miss Nelson is Missing” and “Alice in Wonderland.”
