The ExDay Enrichment class registration process begins! Registrations are due by Friday, January 10, which is the Friday after we return from Winter Break.
The ExDay Enrichment program offers students the opportunity to explore interests, make cross-grade connections, and challenge themselves in fun ways. As with the last session, we have art, carpentry, chess, coding, D&D, gymnastics, frisbee, judo, maker, and robotics. We are adding 2D animation, a new robotics opportunity for K-3 students, beginning hip-hop dance, drama, gardening, micro:bits coding, Minecraft code, and stop-motion animation.

During the event, members of the Class of 2024 currently attending schools in the East Bay (Bentley School and College Preparatory School), Marin (Branson School), and San Francisco (Lick-Wilmerding High School and Urban School) will be on hand to answer questions.

To honor Dr. King's legacy of community and justice, TBS is hosting our annual MLK Jr. Day of Service to make it a 'day on' of volunteering and giving. We will be offering a variety of volunteer opportunities, and collecting essential supplies for our donation drive. Please mark your calendars for January 20th, to join together in service!
Here’s what’s happening on Monday, January 20th:
- Volunteer for local organizations: We are organizing volunteering opportunities with local non-profit organizations throughout the East Bay. Sign up and coordinate with other families on this sign-up sheet: Volunteering sign-up: MLK Jr. Day of Service 2025 Keep an eye out for future opportunities to be added!
- Donate essential supplies: At the UAC, we will be hosting our Essential Supplies Donation Drive to donate items to organizations serving vulnerable communities. Families can drop off new or gently-used items from this list of requested items. (Perhaps you are like me doing some new year’s cleaning, and can set aside some items to donate on that day.)
- Share messages of care: We will also be hosting a card-writing station at the UAC campus where children and adults can write notes of kindness and encouragement to seniors and others in need of connection. Art supplies and cards will be provided.
We make a difference! Last year, our community donated over $2,000 worth of essential supplies and gave their time in service with native plant gardening and community and beach cleanups. TBS was able to support many organizations, including the East Bay Agency for Children, Dorothy Day House, Building Opportunities for Self-Sufficiency (BOSS), Alameda County Community Food Bank, Berkeley Food Pantry, the Women's Daytime Drop-In Center, and the César Chavez Conservancy.
Coretta Scott King said, “The greatest birthday gift my husband could receive is if people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds celebrated the holiday by performing individual acts of kindness through service to others.” I hope this Monday, January 20th, you will join to “receive the gift of giving” through serving others. As we teach our children, it feels good to do good! I look forward to spending time with you to uplift the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and all the causes he, and many others, championed for justice.

We are excited to let you know 8th grade students will be visiting Douglas and Sturgess, which is a specialized traditional mold making facility in Richmond, to learn about their process and do a mold making and casting workshop with their master sculptor and other experts. This visit is happening on Tuesday, January 21th at 9am.
*Please make sure to pack lunch for your students and please prepare them for cold weather and possible rain.

Greetings!
Starting last month during CSEd week and inspired by Caine's Arcade, TBS 6th graders created cardboard arcade games** and are excited to finally share them with the UAC.
Students used low-tech tools (cardboard, duct tape, foil) and augmented them with higher-tech MaKey MaKey boards, circuits, and Scratch programming to make their games even more interactive. On Tuesday, 6th graders are inviting K-5 students up into the lab to play their cardboard arcade games.
Any available 6th grade parenting adults are invited to come and check out their students' creations on Tuesday, January 21st between 1:40-3:20 p.m. Cerrito and Strawberry parenting adults are also invited to stop by if you're free and in case you'd like to see what kind of shenanigans we get up to in middle school science at TBS!
